Kongsberg has been awarded a major contract modification by the Department of War Innovation Unit (DIU) for autonomous underwater capabilities.
The modification to the Prototype Other Transaction Agreement, valued at $54 million, is primarily driven by the delivery of a broad range of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), alongside associated underwater capability components, according to Kongsberg.
The company's CEO, Eirik Lie, said the contract reflects continued cooperation with DIU and the US Navy on autonomous underwater technology.
Camilla Kiss, Executive Vice President of Kongsberg and president of its Discovery division, stated the company had signed autonomous underwater vehicle contracts worth a total of NOK 1.7 billion across all markets so far in 2026.
Autonomous underwater systems are part of Kongsberg’s portfolio for both defense and commercial customers. The firm is also developing capabilities for undersea warfare applications.
Kiss pointed to advances in artificial intelligence, edge processing and autonomy as factors enabling underwater platforms to perform more complex missions and operate for longer periods.
To remind, in July this year, Kongsberg and Oceaneering International were selected by DIU to support the Combat Autonomous Maritime Platform (CAMP) program, focused on the development of an extra-large uncrewed undersea vehicle (XLUUV) for future US Navy missions.
