The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Pinckney (DDG 91) has commenced the second phase of upgrades under the Destroyer Modernization 2.0 (DDG MOD 2.0) program in a Depot Modernization Period (DMP) at General Dynamics NASSCO in San Diego.

The program is focusing on the installation of the SPY-6(V)4 radar and High Efficiency Super-Capacity (HESC) air conditioning plants. The work will make USS Pinckney the first US Navy ship to receive both systems, according to the officials.

The SPY-6(V)4 radar will be integrated with the Aegis Combat System Baseline 10, while the HESC plants will support the increased electrical and cooling requirements of the ship’s upgraded combat systems.

“The collective effort by all stakeholders has finally brought us to the point of execution. Upon Depot Modernization Period completion, USS Pinckney will rejoin the Fleet equipped with the most comprehensive multi-spectral integrated sensor suite designed to maintain maritime superiority for decades to come,” said Capt. Tim Moore, program manager for DDG MOD 2.0.

The current availability follows USS Pinckney’s completion of a 1.5 Depot Modernization Period in 2024. During that period, the destroyer became the first warship to receive the SLQ-32(V)7 Surface Electronic Warfare Improvement Program (SEWIP) system and sponson modifications.

After the 2024 modernization period, USS Pinckney deployed to the Pacific and Middle East areas of operation, where it operated with the upgraded electronic warfare capabilities before returning home.

The DDG MOD 2.0 program uses a phased installation approach known as Split Start to support learning across participating industry partners and inform subsequent modernization work.

The Portfolio Acquisition Executive for Maritime is responsible for delivering surface ships for the U.S. Navy. The organization is intended to consolidate accountability for ship delivery and give leaders broader authority to accelerate the delivery of capabilities while maintaining acquisition discipline.
