BAE Systems has secured a contract from the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) to deliver four Bofors 57Mk3 naval gun systems and associated 57mm 3P programmable ammunition for Sweden’s naval defense requirements.
The contract covers the delivery of the gun systems and Bofors 57mm 3P ammunition, which is designed to engage different types of targets using programmable fuzing and pre-fragmented projectiles.
The Bofors 57Mk3 is a multirole naval gun designed for air defense, anti-surface warfare and naval fire support. Its capabilities allow it to engage aerial threats, including aircraft, missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), as well as surface targets.
The system fires 57mm ammunition and combines a high rate of fire with the ability to switch between different types of ammunition according to the target and mission. This enables a single gun system to support several naval combat roles.
The combination of the Bofors 57Mk3 and 3P ammunition is intended to provide the Swedish Navy with a weapon system capable of responding to a range of threats without requiring a separate gun for each target category.
“This contract reinforces our long-standing role as a trusted partner to the Swedish armed forces and FMV, and our commitment to supporting the Swedish Navy with world-class capability,” said Stefan Löfström, marketing and sales director at BAE Systems Bofors.
“It demonstrates Sweden’s absolute confidence in the Bofors 57Mk3 and its advanced 3P ammunition as key capabilities for Sweden's maritime defence,” he added.
The 57Mk3 is the latest version of the system, incorporating digital fire-control capabilities and programmable ammunition to support engagements against multiple target types.
The contract adds to the Swedish Navy’s use of domestically developed Bofors naval weapon technology. The delivery schedule and the specific vessels intended to receive the four gun systems were not detailed in the contract announcement.
