Defense technology company Ultra Maritime has demonstrated a new capability to detect, track, and classify advanced unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) during the US Navy’s 2026 Lanternfish exercise.
As informed, the demonstration showcased the company’s Sea Spear deployable sonar solution operating in a realistic port protection scenario, enabling the US Navy and industry to evaluate emerging undersea technologies under operational conditions.
During the exercise, Sea Spear consistently detected, tracked and classified medium- and large-diameter unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs), demonstrating its ability to provide persistent acoustic surveillance while transmitting track data to undersea command centers.
The event also marked a key milestone in Ultra Maritime’s strategic partnership with Anduril, aimed at accelerating the deployment of advanced capabilities for covert anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and other maritime defense missions.
Integrated with Anduril’s Seabed Sentry, Sea Spear forms a distributed autonomous undersea network designed for rapid deployment and scalable production.
The system can be covertly deployed from both crewed and uncrewed platforms to provide persistent surveillance in remote areas, maritime chokepoints and other strategically important waterways.
Depending on operational requirements, Sea Spear can be installed as a permanent system or deployed as an attritable asset, offering a flexible and cost-effective solution for extending underwater domain awareness.
Ultra Maritime unveiled Sea Spear in April 2025 as a lightweight deployable sonar system designed to enhance undersea surveillance and anti-submarine warfare capabilities. It is designed as a 21-inch-diameter deployable sonar unit that can be launched from both crewed and uncrewed surface and underwater platforms.
Once deployed, the system expands to create a high-performance, wide-aperture acoustic array capable of long-endurance surveillance and threat monitoring.
