US and partner nations conducted a live-fire sinking exercise (SINKEX) during the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2026 exercise, using a decommissioned guided missile cruiser and amphibious assault ship as targets to test multinational maritime strike and targeting capabilities in the Pacific Ocean.
As disclosed, the vessels, USS Mobile Bay (CG 53 and USS Peleliu (LHA 5), were sunk in waters 15,000 feet deep, more than 50 nautical miles off the northern coast of the island of Kauai.
