The fourth ship in the second batch of German Navy K130 corvettes (Braunschweig class) was christened at Blohm+Voss’ shipyard in Hamburg on May 8, 2025.
As informed, during the ceremony, the corvette, being built by the ARGE 130 consortium consisting of NVL Group, thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) and German Naval Yards Kiel, was named Augsburg. Following the christening, the vessel will undergo all the necessary functional tests and acceptance tests before entering service.
“ The fourth christening in a row marks an important step in the production process of these technically sophisticated naval boats for us at NVL and the entire project team. The modernisation of our naval forces is our top priority in view of the deteriorating security situation ,” said Tim Wagner , CEO of NVL.
The contract for the construction of five corvettes includes construction services, manufacturing, the integration of all systems, devices, and facilities, and the design of the land and training facilities. All the ships are at various stages of construction.
Parallel to the final equipment and commissioning of the boats, the project teams are already conducting sea trials with the second corvette Emden , which was christened in May 2023. The third unit was named Karlsruhe in May last year.
The 90-meter ships are designed for operation in coastal waters, augmenting the capabilities of fast attack boats and frigates. They are equipped with two 27 mm Mauser MLG27 remote-controlled, fully-automatic cannons, and one OTO Melara 76 mm gun.
The corvettes also feature a helicopter landing deck and use the rolling airframe missile (RAM) – guided naval missile for close-in defense against anti-ship missiles, aircraft, helicopters and surface threats.
