U.S. Navy’s George H.W. Bush carrier strike group (GHWBCSG) on Tuesday continued strike missions against ISIS positions after crossing the Suez Canal on Monday.
USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77) and the cruisers and destroyers accompanying it are currently on the return leg of their deployment after completing operations in the U.S. 5th Fleet late May.
This is the second time the group is launching strikes in support of operation Inherent Resolve (OIR) from the Eastern Mediterranean Sea with the first one taking place between March 6 – 8.
“We are resuming a relentless pursuit of ISIS targets, while reinforcing our commitment to partners and allies in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations,” said Rear Adm. Kenneth Whitesell, commander, Carrier Strike Group 2.
The GHWBCSG consists of the flagship USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77), guided-missile cruisers USS Philippine Sea (CG 58) and USS Hue City (CG 66), and guided-missile destroyers USS Laboon (DDG 58) and USS Truxtun (DDG 103).
The GHWBCSG started its third deployment on January 21, 2017.
Operation Inherent Resolve is a U.S.-led mission to eliminate the terrorist group ISIS and the threat they pose to the region and the wider international community.
