USS Memphis’ (SSN 691) commanding officer, and three Sailors are participating in their final namesake visit to the “Volunteer State”, Oct. 6-9.
The crew of the Los Angeles-class attack submarine is visiting their namesake state prior to the completion of Memphis’ inactivation in early 2012. Memphis arrived at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Maine April 7 to complete the process of being retired from the fleet.
“The contributions to culture and commerce from the city of Memphis have added immeasurable vitality to the country that Memphis Sailors have worked so hard to protect over the 33-year life of the ship,” said C mdr. Jeffrey Joseph , commanding officer, Memphis.
During the namesake visit, Joseph will meet with the Tennessee Navy League. While in Memphis, crew members will partake in several namesake related activities.
“It is a tremendous honor for me to represent the crew of the USS Memphis in this final visit to our namesake city. I am particularly grateful to the Memphis Navy League for hosting this visit and for the tremendous support they have provided us over the years,” said Joseph.
Memphis is the Navy’s fourth Los Angeles-class nuclear-powered attack submarine and sixth vessel named in honor of the city of Memphis.
