USS Carr (FFG 52) completed a five-day port visit to Tallinn, Estonia, July 26, as part of a three-month deployment supporting theater security cooperation engagements throughout the Baltic nations.
While in port, Carr’s crew held a reception aboard hosted by Robert Gilchrist , the American Charge de’ Affaires ad interim to Estonia, and met with children from the Rein Ottoson Sailing School.
“The bond between the U.S. and Estonia remains strong,” said Gilchrist during the reception. “Estonian forces worked with us in Iraq and Afghanistan. They do big things with the resources they have.”
The reception was attended by Mikk Marran, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Defense, Brig and civilian business representatives and military personnel from Britain, China, Estonia, Finland and Russia.
“The crew thoroughly enjoyed Tallinn,” said Cmdr. Patrick Kulakowski , Carr commanding officer. “It was an honor to host personnel from Estonia, the American Embassy and all the other guests aboard Carr. I look forward to every opportunity to build understanding by taking advantage of the occasion to talk with our partners and better understand each other’s cultures and views.”
Children from the Rein Ottoson Sailing School received a tour of Carr and had ice cream in the ships’ wardroom.
“Leading the children on a tour of the ship was definitely a highlight,” said Cmdr. Jim Sposato , Carr’s executive officer. “It’s a pleasure to see how excited they are to be here and their eagerness to ask questions.”
The ships’ crew also had the opportunity to enjoy liberty, taking in several of Tallinns’ medieval and cultural sights.
“I was impressed by how well preserved the buildings in Tallinn are,” said Operations Specialist 2nd Class Sean Malin . “I’m glad we had the opportunity to visit another country that only a small portion Sailors will ever get to experience.”
