Hellenic Navy’s second FDI frigate launched (Gallery)

On September 19, 2024, the launching ceremony of the second FDI frigate HS Nearchos took place at the Naval Group shipyard in Lorient.

The FDI for the Hellenic Navy is a 4,500-tonne warship. This multipurpose vessel is designed to conduct operations such as anti-air, anti-submarine, anti-ship, and special forces projection, with unique capabilities against asymmetric threats. The ship also benefits from the latest Thales innovations in radar, sonar and electronic warfare.

Technical specifications of the FD frigate include:

  • Length: approx. 122 meters
  • Width: 18 meters
  • Maximum speed: 27 knots
  • Aviation facilities: 10-ton class helicopter, VTOL unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)

Furthermore, the vessel’s main armaments encompass MBDA Exocet MM40 B3C anti-surface and Aster anti-missile missiles, RAM systems, and MU90 anti-submarine torpedoes, artillery. HS Nearchos can embark simultaneously a helicopter and an aerial vehicle (UAV).

In April this year, Naval Group held a keel-laying ceremony for the first block of the third HS Formion.
