BAE Systems joins two main sections of HMS Cardiff

BAE Systems has achieved a major breakthrough in the construction of the Type 26 frigate, HMS Cardiff, by officially kick-starting the joining process of its two main sections.

The forward end of HMS Cardiff emerged from the yard at the end of last month and is now been integrated with the aft section on the hardstand at the Glasgow shipyard on the river Clyde.

Namely, the aft section has been maneuvered into place and will now undergo lengthy welding work to complete the integration process.

HMS Cardiff will undergo further structural work on the hardstand before being floated off and transported along the Clyde to BAE Systems’ Scotstoun facility in 2024.

First of class, HMS Glasgow, is already being outfitted at BAE Systems’ Scotstoun facility nearby. Construction of all eight Type 26 frigates is expected to be completed by the mid-2030s, with HMS Glasgow the first to be delivered to the Royal Navy in the mid-2020s.

The HMS Cardiff, the latest addition to the Royal Navy’s fleet, is specifically designed for anti-submarine warfare and high-intensity air defense while boasting the ability to swiftly adapt its role to support humanitarian aid efforts and house medical facilities in times of crisis.
