Construction starts on Polish Navy’s 4th Kormoran II minehunter

Polish shipbuilder Remontowa Shipbuilding has started the construction of the fourth Kormoran II-class minehunter for the Polish Navy.

As informed, the steel-cutting ceremony took place at the firm’s yard on 28 March. The ship, which will be named ORP Jaskółka, will be part of the 12. Minesweeper Squadron 8th FOW, stationed in Świnoujście.

The minehunter is being built under a contract approved on 26 June last year by the country’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense Mariusz Błaszczak. 

The vessel is the fourth Kormoran II class minehunter built by Remontowa Shipbuilding. It has a displacement of up to 850 tonnes, a total length of 58.50 meters, and a width of 10.30 meters.

The lead vessel of the class, ORP Kormoran, entered service in November 2017.

Last year, Polish Navy received the second vessel in this class, ORP Albatros.
