Russian submarine Veliky Novgorod launches more missiles against ISIS from the Mediterranean

Russian Navy submarine Veliky Novgorod has launched more cruise missiles at ISIS positions as the Syrian Democratic Forces on Monday started an offensive on the last ISIS stronghold in Deir ez-Zor.

According to the Russian defense ministry, the fifth Project 636.3 submarine to be built for the Russian Navy’s Black Sea Fleet launched a salvo of Kalibr cruise missiles from a submerged position in the Mediterranean Sea.

The statement said the three cruise missiles destroyed control points, a fortified area with a cluster of fighters and armored vehicles, as well as a large arsenal of ISIS weapons and ammunition.

This is not the first time Veliky Novgorod has taken part in operations against ISIS. As we reported earlier, Veliky Novgorod and sister ship Kolpino are on a delivery voyage from Saint Petersburg – where they were built by Admiralty Shipyards – to the Russian Navy’s Black Sea base in Sevastopol.

The two submarines first launched Kalibr missiles towards Syria on September 14 after reaching the Mediterranean Sea in late August.

Veliky Novgorod was launched on March 18 and commissioned into service on October 26, 2016. Kolpino was launched in May 2016 and commissioned on November 24, 2016.
