The US Naval Sea Systems Command has awarded Huntington Ingalls’ Newport News Shipbuilding division two separate contracts for repair and overhaul works on two Los Angeles-class submarines.

In a contract announced on October 13, NAVSEA awarded HII a $65.1 million cost-plus-fixed-fee, firm-fixed-price contract modification for the repair, maintenance, upgrades, and modernization off USS Helena (SSN 725) during her dry-docking selected restricted availability.

The second contract awarded to the company is for fiscal 2019 engineered overhaul of USS Boise (SSN 764). The contract for USS Boise contains options which could bring its value to up to $385.6 million.

Work on the USS Helena is to be completed by April 2018 while works on USS Boise are expected to be completed by February 2021. The contract for the overhaul of USS Boise was awarded to HII as the navy’s public yards do not have enough capacity to perform the work due to delays and work overload.

The Los Angeles-class nuclear-powered fast attack submarines were built for the U.S. Navy from the early 1970s to the mid-1990s by Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company (now part of HII) and General Dynamics Electric Boat.
