The Russian Navy has released a video of the lead Yasen-class nuclear-powered attack submarine Severodvinsk test firing a Kalibr cruise missile in the Barents Sea.

According to the navy, Severodvinsk launched the cruise missile from a submerged position in one of the training grounds of the Northern Fleet as part of a combat exercise.

The navy said the distance from the start line to the target position was about 600 kilometers and the launch was deemed a success.

Severodvinsk is the first of what is expected to be a class of ten Project 885 submarines. It was delivered to the Russian Navy in 2013, twenty years after it was laid down in 1993. Following sea trials, the submarine was commissioned in 2014.

Severodvinsk’s younger sister ships are being built under an improved design called Yasen-M. The first Yasen-M boat was laid down in July 2009 and launched in March 2017.

With a submerged displacement of 13,800 tons, Project 885M submarines are armed with 24 Oniks (SS-N-26) and Kalibr (SS-N-27) cruise missiles in addition to torpedoes. They are reportedly one of the quietest submarines to be operated by Russia.
