Royal Navy patrol ship HMS Severn escorted a Russian landing ship through the English Channel on Sunday.

Severn monitored the progress of the Korolev, a Ropucha-class landing ship, before resuming her usual maritime patrols in UK waters.

In addition to escort duties, the Portsmouth-based ship also conducted fishery protection activity, gunnery practice and exercises with other Royal Navy vessels.

Severn is one of four River-class patrol ships, three – Tyne, Severn and Mersey – conduct fishery protection and other duties around the UK, while HMS Clyde is permanently deployed to the Falkland Islands.

Earlier this month, Type 23 frigate HMS Sutherland escorted two Russian warships through the Channel as they sailed through the Dover Straits from the North Sea.
