The Hellenic Navy’s Type 209 submarine HS Poseidon will be joining the EUNAVFOR operation in the Mediterranean Sea from February 15, the ministry of defense announced.

HS Poseidon will spend some two weeks contributing to EU’s mission of saving lives and preventing human and arms smuggling in the Mediterranean Sea.

The Greek Navy said the submarine would depart the group, currently composed of units from France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Great Britain, on March 1.

HS Poseidon is the lead ship of a class of three Type 209 submarines built for the Hellenic Navy between 1970 and 1980. The submarine was launched on March 21, 1978 and delivered on March 21, 1979. The other two submarines in the class are HS Amphitriti and HS Pontos.
