The Royal Thai Navy has picked MAN to provide engines for the second offshore patrol vessel the country is building under an agreement with BAE Systems.

Under the contract, the German mechanical engineering company will deliver two 16V28/33D STC engines.

The 90 metre vessel is an improved River-class design and follows HTMS Krabi that was ordered by Thailand in 2009, and accepted by the Navy from Bangkok Dock in 2013.

BAE Systems is assisting the Royal Thai Navy with the construction of the second OPV under a contract signed in January 2016. Under the agreement, BAE Systems is providing engineering support and advice during construction of the vessel in Thailand.

Olivier Condemine, Senior Sales Manager – Naval & Governmental – MAN Diesel & Turbo said: “Sequential turbocharging improves the already proven performance and fuel-efficiency of the 28/33D engine, especially at intermediate and low-load operations – known as silent running – which is very important for this kind of vessel.”
