Indian shipbuilding and maintenance company, Cochin Shipyard, launched the 20th Fast Patrol Vessel for the Indian Coast Guard.

Named ICGS Ayush, it is the last in the series of 20 patrol vessels. The ship was launched by the mayor of Kochi during a ceremony attended by Indian Coast Guard and company officials.

Earlier in 2016, Cochin Shipyard delivered the 16th ship of the series to the Indian Coast Guard on January 12, two months ahead of schedule, as the company said. According to Cochin, the rest of the vessels under construction are also progressing ahead of schedule.

These Coast Guard ships are intended for anti piracy, fisheries protection and monitoring, coastal patrol, anti smuggling and for search and rescue operations.

The company further stated that, although it had contracted to deliver the twentieth vessel by March 2017, it would be able to deliver the 20th ship this year.

Designed by the Indian Smart Engineering & Design Solutions (SEDS), the 50-meter vessels have a beam of 7.6 metres and a design speed of over 33 knots.
