Brazilian Navy’s BNS Amazonas came alongside in Cape Town, South Africa at the V&A Waterfront for a port call on January 8.

BNS Amazonas, a 90-meter offshore patrol vessel, left Brazil late December 2015.

The ship forms part of the south east naval grouping of the Brazilian Navy which is used in performing maritime security in Brazil’s territorial waters, including the protection of the country’s oil and gas reserves.

Operational visits by foreign navies ensure that international contact is maintained between naval forces. BNS Amazonas stayed in the port from January 8-12. They paid a courtesy call to Flag Officer Fleet, Rear Admiral B.K. Mhlana at the Fleet Command Headquarters in Simon’s Town and BNS Amazonas hosted a return luncheon on board during their stay.

BNS Amazonas is the first of three offshore patrol vessels in the Amazonas class which was built by VT Shipbuilding, now known as BAE Systems Surface Ships. The three ships entered service with the Brazilian Navy during 2012 and 2013.
