Authorities

US Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV) Ray Mabus visited Sailors aboard USS George Washington (CVN 73), Oct. 30 – Nov. 1, as the ship transited the Strait of Magellan.

Mabus’ visit included a tour of the ship, observing transit of the strait, a group photo, and an all-hands call.

The secretary also conducted award presentations, promotion and pinning ceremonies, and re-enlisted Sailors during the all-hands call.

Capt. Timothy C. Kuehhas, Washington’s commanding officer, said:

The Strait of Magellan marks our half-way point in our [Southern Seas 2015] tour, as we transit from the Pacific to the Atlantic ocean.

It is a remarkable experience for the crew to have the SECNAV come aboard our ship during this time.

The Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, deployed as part of Southern Seas 2015, anchored outside of Punta Arenas, Chile, Nov. 1, a city located in the middle of the 570-kilometer voyage through the Strait of Magellan.
