SNMG1, Tanzanian Navy Train Together

Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 took the opportunity to train with the Tanzanian Navy during a port visit earlier this month. From 2 – 6 July, the SNMG1 and Task Force 508 flagship HDMS ESBERN SNARE was in port in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania to replenish fuel, water, and food.

This visit proved to be a good opportunity to engage with the nation, represented by 20 Tanzanian Navy personnel who conducted training together with sailors from the flagship.

“Our presence in these waters is important to help the nations in the region to handle the pirate problem,” said the Commanding Officer of ESBERN SNARE, Commander Senior Grade Søren T. Larsen of the Royal Danish Navy. “Sharing our know how with colleagues from the Tanzanian Navy directly supports that objective.”

During the visit, the Tanzanian soldiers were trained in protecting ships with armed guards, fire fighting and ship damage control as well as maintenance of small boat engines.

The Commander of TF 508, Commodore Aage Buur Jensen, and core members of his staff used the time in port to conduct several liaison meetings. Amongst others with Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, Minister of Defence and National Service, and Hon. Dr. Harrison G. Mwakyembe, Minister of Transport.

“Engagement and cooperation with the regional actors at all levels in our area of operation is paramount. NATO presence is instrumental, but without the support from the nations in the region, like Tanzania, the task would be much harder.” said Commodore Jensen in a brief statement. “As a signatory of the Djibouti Code of Conduct, Tanzania has taken a firm stand against piracy,” he concluded.
