VIDEO: Dutch Navy Submarine Visits Port of Tyne

The Royal Netherlands Navy’s submarine, HNLMS Walrus, paid a visit to the Port of Tyne over the Easter weekend, according to the Shields Gazette.

This is the first time in 10 years that a submarine has visited the Port’s Northumbrian Quay.

The submarine was not opened to the public during her four-day stay and she departed Northumbrian Quay on Monday, 21st April.

HNLMS Walrus was launched on 28 October 1985, but on 14 August 1986 an electrical fire broke out on board causing damage costing 225 million Dutch guilders to repair.

Her completion was delayed until September of 1989 and the submarine was finally commissioned on 25 March 1992.

In 2008 it was announced that the Netherlands will spend up to USD 155 million on a programme to upgrade all four Walrus-class submarines. These improvements will keep them operational until at least 2025.
