Two Indian Navy Commanders Relieved of Duty

In the aftermath of the recent mishaps that have caused various safety concerns, the Indian Navy has decided to suspend the commanding officers of INS Talwar and INS Betwa.

 
Over the recent period, the Indian Navy has been in the center of media attention, due to a number of accidents that marred its reputation.

In December last year, the Indian Navy frigate INS Talwar collided with a fishing trawler, near Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra, inflicting considerable damage to the trawler that capsized and sank. Four persons aboard the fishing vessel were injured.

On January 4, INS Betwa, a guided missile frigate, was reported to had run aground near the Mumbai naval base. Nevertheless, the Navy denied these claims by saying that the accident did not occur, but that there had been a minor issue with the frigate, namely an anomaly in its sonar dome, which is situated at the very bottom of the ship.

The two commanders could face a court martial and, if proven guilty, could lose their privileges and even their jobs, according to the Hindustan Times.
