USS Bonhomme Richard Departs Darwin, Australia

The forward-deployed amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) and embarked 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) departed Darwin, Australia Sept. 10.

Bonhomme Richard is concluding Exercise Koolendong 2013 (KD13), a bilateral exercise that took place at the Bradshaw Field Training Area (BFTA) in Australia’s Northern Territory.
While in port, Bonhomme Richard Sailors and Marines conducted an onload of 31st MEU Marines and their equipment after completion of KD13, as well as participated in a volunteer service project.

Sailors and Marines visited Millner Primary School’s out-of-school hours care program for a volunteer service project. The program offers extracurricular activities to children between the ages 4 and 13. Sailors and Marines engaged in activities with the children which included arts and crafts, sports, and games.

“It is important for us to give back to the community,” said Religious Programs Specialist Seaman Brandon Ingram. “It feels great to able to volunteer and interact with the children.

The Bonhomme Richard Amphibious Ready Group, commanded by Amphibious Squadron (PHIBRON) 11, is currently conducting joint force operations in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of responsibility.
