USA: Lockheed Martin Nabs USD 15.3 Mln Aegis Contract

Lockheed Martin, Mission Systems and Training, seated in Moorestown, N.J., has received a USD 15.3 million modification to previously awarded contract to exercise options for fiscal 2013 Aegis weapon system modernization upgrade requirements.

This modification will cover the production of three technical insertion 12 Aegis modernization upgrade equipment sets to support the modernization of Arleigh Burke-class Aegis guided missile destroyers of the United States Navy, namely USS Arleigh Burke (DDG 51), USS Mitscher (DDG-57), and USS Milius (DDG-69). The modification also provides for integration testing at the Backfit Production Test Facility.

Two modernization programs – for both cruisers and destroyers – are currently in place that will improve warfighting capabilities, extend hull service life, and reduce total ownership cost through the fielding of Open Architecture and commercial computing technologies.

The Arleigh Burke class combat system centers around the Aegis Combat System and the SPY-1D, multi-function, phased array radar. The series features a combination of Aegis, the Vertical Launching System, an advanced anti-submarine warfare system, advanced anti-aircraft missiles, Tomahawk land attack missiles and unique survivability features.

Work will be performed in Moorestown, N.J. (50 percent), Clearwater, Fla. (50 percent), and is expected to be completed by November 2016.
