NASCCO Pens USS Peleliu Contract

National Steel and Shipbuilding Company, based in San Diego, California, has received a USD 13.06 million modification to previously awarded contract for USS Peleliu (LHA 5) fiscal 2013 phased maintenance availability.

Under the contract, National Steel and Shipbuilding Co., commonly referred to as NASSCO, will plan and execute depot-level maintenance, alterations, and modifications that will update and improve USS Peleliu’s military and technical capabilities.

USS Peleliu is the final ship in the TARAWA class. Initially named DA NANG but commissioned as Peleliu, she is the first ship to bear the name of the island and the second ship named in honor of the battles fought in the Palau Islands.

The warship was commissioned on May 3, 1980 at Ingalls Shipyard, Pascagoula, Mississippi.

NASSCO will perform the work in San Diego, which is expected to be completed by January 2014.
