Equipment & technology

BAE Systems,  Land & Armaments LP, U.S. Combat Systems,  from Minneapolis, Minnesota, has received a $ 9.2 million modification to previously awarded contract.

BAE Systems will provide engineering services in support of the MK 41 vertical launching system.

The Mark 41 Vertical Launching System (Mk 41 VLS) is a shipborne missile canister launching system, which provides a rapid-fire launch capability against hostile threats.

The Mk 41 is capable of firing the following missiles: Standard 1, 2, 3, and 6, Tomahawk, RUM-139 VL-ASROC, RIM-7 Sea Sparrow, and RIM-162 ESSM.  The missiles are pre-loaded into “canisters”, which are then loaded into the individual “cells” of the launcher.

The work will provide technical and engineering services for the support of research, development, test, evaluation, upgrades, operation, maintenance and product improvements.

BAE Systems will perform the work in Minneapolis, Minn. (87 %); Brea, Calif. (12 %); and Aberdeen, S.D. (1 %), which is expected to be completed by September 2013.
