HMAS Darwin Joins Samoan Independence Celebrations

The Royal Australian Navy today helped Samoa celebrate the island nation’s 50th anniversary of independence. 221 personnel from Royal Australian Navy Frigate HMAS Darwin marched past at Samoa’s Parliament Grounds.

Commanding Officer of Darwin, Commander Brian Schlegel said his ship’s company are proud to be representing Australia at Samoa’s Golden Jubilee.

“Australia and Samoa are partners in the Pacific. Not only do we have a common interest in maintaining regional maritime security for growth and prosperity, we have strong people links, which will be enhanced during our visit.”

The Royal Australian Navy regularly works with the Samoan Police Maritime Wing as part of the Pacific Patrol Boat Program. The Program is a fundamental aspect of Australia’s Defence Cooperation in the Pacific. The Program contributes to Samoa’s development of a professional regional maritime surveillance and policing capability.

Earlier this year, the full-time Australian Maritime Surveillance Adviser based in Apia played an integral role in the successful search and rescue of three locals lost at sea.

During their five day stay in Apia, personnel will take part in cultural festivities and take part in a working bee at the Samoan Cancer Society.

Darwin will also field a team to compete against the Samoan Kangaroos in a friendly Aussie Rules football as part of the celebrations.

Darwin is undertaking a Western Pacific and North America deployment which will see her conduct port visits to Samoa, Tonga, Pearl Harbor and Guam.
