Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) will shift its home port from San Diego to Bremerton, Washington, later this year to complete a long-planned maintenance availability.
As disclosed, the relocation will be executed as a permanent change of station (PCS) for the crew and family members. This shift comes after returning from a 10-month deployment to the U.S. 3rd, 5th, and 7th Fleet areas of operations in support of US national security objectives.
Abraham Lincoln arrived in San Diego in January 2020, serving as the flagship for Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 3. The carrier safeguarded critical sea lanes across the Indo-Pacific and Middle Eastern theaters.
USS Abraham Lincoln is the fifth Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and is named in honor of the 16th President of the United States. Commissioned in November 1989, the carrier has deployed multiple times in more than 36 years of service, supporting evacuation efforts in the Philippines after the eruption of Mount Pinatubo in 1991, as well as Operations Restore Hope, Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom, Inherent Resolve, and Epic Fury.
Home port shifts are part of the navy's continued commitment to the strategic dispersal of ships. Regularly scheduled depot-level maintenance maximizes the lifespan of the navy vessels and keeps the fleets lethal,
The work conducted during the maintenance period will maximize the lifespan of Abraham Lincoln and re-establish the carrier at the highest state of material and combat readiness, the officials concluded.
