NHIndustries (NHI), together with the NATO Helicopter Management Agency (NAHEMA), has completed the first flight of the NH90 Software Release 3 (SWR3) configuration, also dubbed Block 1.
As disclosed, the flight took place on July 21 in Italy, where an Italian Navy SH90 helicopter was upgraded to the new SWR3 standard. This important achievement marks the beginning of the flight test campaign for the SWR3 configuration and represents a major milestone in the evolution of the NH90 program, according to NHI.
It comes two years after the signature of the landmark contract between NAHEMA and NHIndustries for the development and qualification of the SWR3 standard.
Software Release 3 will implement major operational improvements for both NH90 variants, the tactical transport helicopter (TTH) and the Nato frigate helicopter (NFH). Developed through the close collaboration of the NHI partner companies, Airbus Helicopters, Leonardo and GKN Aerospace, SWR3 positions the NH90 to meet the most demanding NATO future mission requirements, it was highlighted.
The SWR3 configuration introduces several new capabilities, including the integration of Link 22 tactical data link capability, a high-definition electro-optical observation system (LEOSS-T), upgraded anti-submarine warfare sonar systems including OTS-90 Mark II and FLASH, an enhanced GNSS/FMS navigation system, and additional weapon integration options.
The upgraded configuration is designed to improve NH90 mission performance across maritime operations. The integration of Link 22 enables secure line-of-sight and beyond-line-of-sight communications without relying on satellite connectivity, improving information exchange and interoperability with NATO forces.
New electro-optical and sonar systems enhance surveillance, target detection, identification and tracking capabilities. Combined with the NH90’s naval mission system, these upgrades are expected to support a wider range of missions, including maritime security operations, search and rescue, anti-surface warfare and anti-submarine warfare.
The first flight demonstrated the integration of the new systems and begins the flight test campaign ahead of SWR3 qualification and future entry into service.
