Italian shipbuilding major Fincantieri, through its subsidiary WASS Submarine Systems, has secured a significant order from the Indian Navy for the supply of heavyweight torpedoes to be deployed on the six Scorpène-class submarines in service with the Indian fleet.

At the heart of the contract is the Black Shark Advanced (BSA) heavyweight torpedo, a system already in operational service with the Italian Navy and six other navies worldwide. The milestone deal was signed in the year marking the company’s 150th anniversary, underscoring its role in Italy’s underwater defense industry.

The scope of the agreement extends well beyond the supply of torpedoes. It also includes the delivery of launching networks for Scorpène-class submarines, as well as maintenance equipment and a full package of spare parts.

Together, these elements provide the Indian Navy with a fully integrated, end-to-end solution designed to ensure long-term operational readiness and sustainment.

The total value of the contract is over €200 million. Production of the systems will take place at WASS’s facility in Livorno, which serves as the company’s center of excellence for underwater systems.

Deliveries are scheduled to occur between 2028 and 2030, in line with the Indian Navy’s modernization timelines.
