The Brazilian Navy has signed an agreement with the Royal Navy for the acquisition of two amphibious assault ships of the Albion class, HMS Albion (L14) and HMS Bulwark (L15).
As disclosed, the agreement was signed at LAAD Defence & Security 2025. The move represents a substantial reinforcement of Brazil’s naval power.
These ships are particularly notable for their versatility, extending beyond traditional power projection to encompass crucial humanitarian operations, emergency response, and assistance during public calamities. They will also provide vital support to civil defense efforts.
This acquisition directly addresses the growing need for robust naval support in emergency situations affecting Brazilian society.
Rear Admiral Edgar Luiz Siqueira Barbosa , Director General of Navy Material, emphasized this point, stating, “Recent climate-related disasters, such as the devastating floods in São Sebastião (SP) in 2023 and Rio Grande do Sul in 2024, have underscored the critical role Navy ships play in supporting the population during times of crisis.”
In November last year, the Royal Navy announced it will decommission two of its Albion-class vessels to renew the navy’s fleet. Built by BAE Systems Marine in Barrow-in-Furness, HMS Albion was launched in March 2001, while its sister ship HMS Bulwark was launched in November 2001, also from Barrow.
Designed as an amphibious warfare ship, HMS Albion is capable of carrying 400 sailors and Royal Marines. The loading dock of HMS Albion is packed with the trucks, machinery, and watercraft its crew use to carry out their duties. The ship also carries emergency supplies for use in disaster relief operations, from food supplies to water pumps.
After the decommissioning of Albion-class units, the amphibious operations will be carried out by Bay-class ships.
