The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (Försvarets Materielverk – FMV), the Swedish Armed Forces, and local defense company Saab have tested a new lightweight torpedo system, the Torpedo 47, on a temporary platform.

As disclosed, the test firing at sea was conducted on a combat boat 90 (CB90), a fast military assault craft developed by Swedish shipyard Dockstavarvet, a part of Saab.

The test firings showed that this combination of weapon system and platform fits together very well. In particular, the results show that the Torpedo 47 weapon system works well even with smaller platforms than the system is traditionally developed for, according to FMV.

“We have carried out tests and trials with Torpedo 47 installed on a combat boat 90,” said Joakim Drakfors, Project Manager at FMV.

“It has been a collaboration between the projects Amphibious Battalion 2030 and new light torpedo. We see this system solution as a good platform on which to be able to test or develop temporary installations of the weapon system.”

According to the officials, the Torpedo 47 could be combined with other attack systems in the future, and coordinate action in two dimensions against threats both below the surface and above the water.

Preparation of the results is being carried out between FMV and the Swedish Armed Forces to plan how the findings will be handled.
