In August 2023, the Indian Navy signed a significant contract with Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) for the acquisition of five FSSs, with deliveries expected to commence in mid-2027. This move is part of the navy’s ongoing efforts to enhance its blue-water capabilities and strengthen its fleet.

To expedite the project and meet stringent delivery timelines, HSL has partnered with private shipbuilder L&T Shipyard, Kattupalli. Under the agreement, two of the five FSS will be constructed at L&T’s Kattupalli facility, to ensure optimal utilization of India’s shipbuilding capacity.

The FSSs are set to play a pivotal role in the Indian Navy’s operations by providing critical logistical support during extended missions. These ships, with a displacement of over 40,000 tons, will be equipped to carry fuel, water, ammunition, and essential stores, enabling prolonged naval operations at sea. Their capabilities are expected to enhance the Indian Navy’s reach and operational mobility.

In addition to their primary role, the FSS will also serve as vital assets for humanitarian aid and disaster relief (HADR) operations. The ships will be equipped to evacuate personnel and quickly deliver relief material in the aftermath of natural disasters.

Last month, the Indian Navy held a steel-cutting ceremony for the third fleet support ship at L&T Shipyard.
