Dutch Navy takes delivery of two upgraded landing craft

The Royal Netherlands Navy has taken delivery of two of four new upgraded landing craft utilities (LCUs).

These vessels, which have undergone a comprehensive modernization, are now equipped to serve effectively until at least 2032.

The landing craft are crucial assets for the Navy, primarily used for transporting heavy equipment during amphibious operations. This renovation process ensures that the vessels meet new operational requirements and the evolving demands of military operations. According to the navy, key updates include enhancements to the sensors, as well as upgrades to the weapons and command systems, providing increased operational efficiency. In addition, ballistic protective equipment has been installed to enhance the crew’s safety in hostile environments.

The modernization also focuses on improving the crew’s living and working conditions. New sleeping accommodations, sanitary facilities, and maintenance spaces have been integrated into the design to ensure a higher level of comfort during extended missions. The LCUs have also received a power boost, with their generators being fully renewed.

Furthermore, the wheelhouse has been reconfigured, featuring a completely redesigned layout and the installation of modern navigation and communication equipment. To improve exhaust management and environmental efficiency, the exhaust outlets have been relocated to the rear of the ship.

The overhaul of these landing craft was carried out by De Haas Shipyards in Rotterdam, who performed the so-called “midlife upgrade”, a process designed to extend the lifespan and enhance the capabilities of the vessels.

The modernization of these landing craft is expected to “significantly boost” their operational capacity, flexibility, and survivability, particularly during amphibious and multifunctional military operations. This upgrade is said to strengthen the Netherlands’ role within NATO and enhance its contributions to collective defense efforts.

By improving the capabilities of these vessels, the Dutch Navy ensures the effective protection of both national and allied territories, supporting NATO’s broader strategic goals.

As part of its modernization efforts, the Dutch Navy signed a deal with French shipbuilder Naval Group for the Replacement Netherlands Submarine Capability project, based on the Barracuda family expeditionary submarines.
