Under the recently awarded docking selected restricted availability (DSRA) contract, BAE Systems will undertake a comprehensive overhaul of the USS Green Bay at its San Diego shipyard.

The work, scheduled to begin in February 2025, will involve dry-docking the 208-meter-long amphibious transport dock to address a range of critical maintenance and refurbishment tasks. The shipyard, along with industry partners, will carry out essential repairs and upgrades to key areas of the ship.

The scope of the DSRA work includes extensive maintenance on the underwater hull to ensure the vessel’s structural integrity, repairs to the system of ballast tanks, and preservation of the amphibious well deck area, which is vital for launching and recovering landing craft and vehicles, according to BAE Systems.

In addition, the crew’s living spaces will undergo refurbishment, to enhance functionality for the sailors and marines who serve onboard. These upgrades will play a crucial role in maintaining the ship’s operational readiness and extending its service life, the company added.

Eric Icke, Vice President and General Manager of BAE Systems San Diego Ship Repair, emphasized the importance of the DSRA, noting that it marks a significant milestone in the ship’s lifecycle.

“USS Green Bay’s DSRA is a major event in the service life of the 15-year-old ship,” Icke said.

“Once completed, the DSRA will allow Green Bay to continue executing a wide range of naval missions for many years to come, ensuring it remains a vital asset to the Navy.”

USS Green Bay is the fourth ship of the San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ships, which are designed to support a variety of amphibious operations, including the transport of troops, vehicles, and equipment.

Commissioned in January 2009, Green Bay is the second US Navy vessel to bear the name, honoring the city of Green Bay, Wisconsin.

This DSRA is expected to help ensure that the ship remains fully capable of performing its critical mission, whether deployed for humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, or combat operations.

Last year, BAE Systems received contract from the US Navy to provide modernization and maintenance services aboard guided-missile destroyer USS Laboon (DDG 58) and amphibious assault ship USS Wasp (LHD 1).
