Defense company Saab has been contracted to supply Sea Giraffe 1X naval radar for the Swedish Navy.

As disclosed, the company received the order from the Swedish Defense Materiel Administration (FMV). The value of the order is approximately SEK 340 million ($31 million). The deliveries are scheduled for 2024-2026.

According to Saab, the Sea Giraffe 1X naval radar is a 3D, active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar offering simultaneous surface and air surveillance capabilities.

The system can detect, track, and classify objects in the air and on the surface, including drones. This software-defined radar enables updates to meet new threats, Saab said.

The entire system weighs less than 650 pounds (294 kilograms) in total, which is why it is suitable for both smaller and larger ships, as well as autonomous vessels.

This order includes Saab’s Sea Giraffe 1X naval radar system in different configurations for training as well as installation on surface ships.

“We are happy to continue to provide the Swedish Navy with modern radar systems. Sea Giraffe 1X will contribute in protecting costal and littoral areas and strengthen the naval units with advanced capabilities to detect, track and classify threats in the air and on the surface,” stated Carl-Johan Bergholm , head of Saab’s business area Surveillance.

In related news, Saab received a contract to supply its Sea Giraffe 1X for the German frigates of the Brandenburg-class (F123).

In separate news, Saab has been selected by defense company Babcock to support the design and development of the Swedish Navy’s new Luleå-class corvettes. The partners will also work closely together to identify potential export markets for the Luleå design.
