HII lays keel of US Navy’s Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS Sam Nunn

HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding has authenticated the keel of new Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer Sam Nunn (DDG 133). 

As disclosed, the keel-laying ceremony took place on November 22, 2024. The ship’s name honors Samuel Augustus Nunn Jr., a former U.S. senator from Georgia and co-founder of the Nuclear Threat Initiative.

USS Sam Nunn (DDG 133) is the fifth Flight III destroyer built at Ingalls Shipbuilding. Flight III Arleigh Burke-class destroyers feature some key design upgrades.

These include the AN/SPY-6(V)1 air and missile defense radar (AMDR) and the Aegis Baseline 10 combat system. These enhancements are designed to address evolving threats to the navy well into the 21st century, according to the officials.

The destroyers can conduct a variety of operations, from peacetime presence and crisis management to sea control and power projection.

In August this year, General Dynamic Bath Iron Works (BIW) held a keel-laying ceremony for Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer, the future USS William Charette (DDG 130).

Recently, the US Navy commissioned its newest Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS John Basilone at a ceremony held in New York.
