The Royal Danish Navy (RDN) has deployed Schiebel’s unmanned air system (UAS) Camcopter S-100 to carry out maritime surveillance tasks over a two-month period.
Stationed in Denmark’s northernmost town Skagen, the UAS will support the navy alongside other national authorities in carrying out various maritime surveillance tasks, including detecting, verifying, and providing information on potential oil spills and discharges at sea.

The UAS is 3 meters long and weighs 100 kg. It is equipped with an L3 Wescam Electro-Optical / Infra-Red (EO/IR) camera gimbal, an Overwatch Imaging PT-8 Oceanwatch, and an Automatic Identification System (AIS) receiver, according to the company.
The unit is a part of the Insight 22, a project funded by the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA), which is a European Union agency charged with reducing the risk of maritime accidents.
All data gathered from the flights will be shared live through the EMSA RPAS Data Centre allowing users to monitor any unusual activity at sea with a potentially harmful impact on the safety and security of persons and vessels in the area or affecting the environment itself.
The S-100’s multiple sensors are expected to enhance the maritime surveillance capabilities of the Danish Navy.
To remind, Schiebel recently received an order for additional Camcopter S-100 UAVs from the Royal Thai Navy.
