The non-commissioned officer, who has been identified as First Marshall (primo maresciallo) Gioacchino Verde, sustained the fatal injuries as a mooring line snapped during a regular berthing procedure.

The incident occurred at the Mar Grande naval base in Taranto on January 12.

The boatswain’s mate was immediately transferred for surgery to the SS Annunziata hospital in a conscious condition. Four days later, however, hospital staff announced his death.

Verde spent 36 years in service with the Italian Navy.

The Italian Navy said an investigation into the incident is now underway.
