The name was announced by Secretary of the Navy Richard V. Spencer in a ceremony aboard the USS Cod submarine memorial in Cleveland.

Future USS Cleveland is the fourth ship to bear the name Cleveland. The Navy did not specify whether the new LCS will be a Freedom or Independence variant. Of the 34 LCS ordered, there are two unnamed Independence and one unnamed Freedom-variant ships.

“The city of Cleveland has been steadfast partner to the Navy and Marine Corps team and it is fitting to name a future Littoral Combat Ship after the city and citizens of Cleveland,” said Secretary of the Navy Richard V. Spencer.

Littoral combat ships are named for regionally important US cities and communities.

LCS is a modular, reconfigurable ship, designed to meet validated fleet requirements for surface warfare (SUW), anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and mine countermeasures (MCM) missions in the littoral region. An interchangeable mission package is embarked on each LCS and provides the primary mission systems in one of these warfare areas.
