The operation was carried out off the coast of Clacton-on-Sea, Essex, on August 31.

The WWII German bomb had been caught up in nets put out by fishermen in that area.

After being called to the scene, the navy sent its Southern Diving Unit 2 (SDU2) which provides military diving and explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) services.

Watch the video shared by HMNB Portsmouth on Twitter showing how the naval experts safely blew up the bomb:

Earlier this year, Portsmouth-based SDU2 also detonated a 500kg WWII bomb found in the River Thames. The bomb was detonated in the waters off the MOD’s Shoeburyness range in February.
