The vessel was launched by Italian shipbuilder Intermarine SpA at its Messina shipyard. The ceremony was attended by the Chief of Staff of the Italian Navy, Admiral Valter Girardelli.

The lead ship was named after Angelo Cabrini, an Italian Navy Admiral and recipient of the Gold Medal of Military Valour.

The two UNPAV vessels are referred to as Unità Navale Polivalente Alta Velocità (UNPAV) in Italy and measure over 40 meters in length and 8 meters in width. They are powered by three Rolls-Royce MTU 2000 series diesel engines connecting to three Kamewa S4 water jets.

The vessels will be used to support Italian Navy special forces for both training and operations. Additionally, the UNPAV will be used to patrol Italian exclusive economic zone waters and fight illegal trafficking activities.

Angelo Cabrini (P 420) is expected to be delivered to the Italian Navy in the first half of 2020 after further outfitting and sea trials.
