General Dynamics unit gets services contract for US Navy NRMD

General Dynamics unit has been awarded a $38.4 million contract to staff and operate the US Navy’s nuclear regional maintenance department (NRMD) in Connecticut in support of returning mission-ready submarines to the fleet.

General Dynamics Electric Boat (GDEB) will provide services to support requirements on operational nuclear-powered submarines assigned to Submarine Base New London, the US Department of Defense said.

As informed, the contract includes options which, if exercised, would bring the cumulative value of this contract to $210.4 million.

Work will be performed in Groton, Connecticut, and is expected to be complete by April 2023.

The contractor, Washington-based Naval Sea Systems Command, will obligate $28.2 million in fiscal 2018 operations and maintenance funds at the time of award, the US DoD added.

General Dynamics Electric Boat designs, constructs, and repairs submarines for the US Navy. Currently, the company produces two submarines a year and is ramping up to build three by 2021.

The company is also expanding its Groton facility through the construction of a new dry dock and manufacturing superstructure. This new facility will house the construction and new Columbia-class nuclear powered ballistic missile submarines which will be replacing the aging Ohio-class.
