Saab, ASC to update management system for Collins class submarines

Sweden’s defense contractor Saab has signed a contract with Australia’s ASC for the supply of an updated Integrated Ship Control Management and Monitoring System (ISCMMS) for four Royal Australian Navy Collins class submarines.

As informed, the contract value is AUD 24.2 million (around USD 19 million).

“Saab Australia carried out design, software and hardware development work for the updated ISCMMS during the first stage of the project and this contract acknowledges the success of that work, rolling out the upgrades to the remaining submarines in the fleet,” Andy Keough, managing director of Saab Australia, commented.

Phase one of the project saw the updated ISCMMS software and hardware developed by Saab and integrated into HMAS Collins by ASC, with HMAS Waller scheduled for later this year.

ASC will integrate the new system into the remaining submarines commencing in 2019, as they complete their maintenance cycles.

“ASC built the Collins Class submarine fleet and is responsible for sustaining and upgrading the submarines. We look forward to working closely with Saab to complete the second phase of this major upgrade program,” Stuart Whiley, Chief Executive Officer of ASC, said.

ISCMMS allows the submarine crew to centrally control many submarine systems, fully integrating the management of propulsion, trim, power generation and ship services on board the submarine.
