Detyens Shipyards gets $16.4M for USNS Robert E. Peary dry docking

The US Navy’s Military Sealift Command has awarded Detyens Shipyards a $16.4 million contract for the overhaul and dry docking of Lewis and Clark-class dry cargo ship USNS Robert E. Peary (T-AKE 5).

The 75-calendar day shipyard availability will include main generator maintenance and cleaning, five year main engine flex hose replacement, dry-docking and undocking, propeller shaft and stern tube inspect, underwater hull cleaning and painting, freeboard cleaning and painting, sea valve replacements and reverse osmosis unit sea-chest installation among other tasks.

The contract includes options which, if exercised, would bring the total contract value to $16,418,401.

Work will be performed at Detyens Shipyards’ North Charleston, South Carolina, facility and is expected to be completed by June 1, 2018.

A contract for the dry-docking of another dry cargo ship, the USNS Charles Drew (T-AKE 10), was awarded to Vigor Marine four days earlier on February 12. The USNS Charles Drew dry docking is expected to be concluded by May 13, 2018.
