NATO SNMG1 ships join Norway’s TG 18-1 exercise

The Royal Norwegian Navy has hosted over ten NATO and ally vessels in Bergen this weekend ahead of the start of two important international exercises.

Ships from Denmark, France, Germany, Poland, The Netherlands, Canada, and Spain will spend the next two weeks off the Norwegian coast conducting maneuvers as part of the Norwegian fleet’s annual exercise TG 18-1 and the Norway-hosted NATO exercise Dynamic Guard.

A total of 14 ships and submarines are taking part in TG 18-1 which supports the training and qualification of new submarine commanders, in addition to focusing on improving warfare capabilities under challenging conditions.

Drills are taking place in the North Sea, in fjords around Bergen, and will be joined by smaller aircraft and helicopters.

TG 18-1 is linked to the annual NATO exercise Dynamic Guard which focuses on air defense and electronic warfare. In the drills off Norway, NATO will be represented by the Standing Maritime Group 1 composed of Royal Canadian Navy frigate HMCS St. John’s and group flagship – Danish frigate HDMS Niels Juel.
