Norwegian Navy orders SEA’s flight deck simulator

The Royal Norwegian Navy (RNN) has ordered upgraded flight deck simulator systems from the UK-based systems engineering and software company SEA.

Norway ordered the upgraded portable DECKsim virtual reality trainer after using the flight deck officer (FDO) simulator DECKsim for five years at its naval training establishment in Bergen.

The new man portable solution will allow the Norwegian Navy to train individuals on board any ship or at any land-based facility. The DECKsim system replicates flight decks (ships and oil platforms) and land-based airfield environments for training aircraft handling procedures.

“We have harnessed the latest developments in VR technology and embodied it within the modular DECKsim system,” SEA business development executive, Andy McGowan explained. “The result is a truly portable solution which efficiently addresses FDO ‘currency’ training and testing, which is a challenge for all organisations.”

According to the company, current users of DECKsim have reduced FDO related live aircraft flying hours by up to 50% giving a rapid return on investment. In addition to lowering training costs, the system delivers an environment where an individual can train in routine and emergency operating conditions, which is impossible with the live platform.
