Submarine tender USS Frank Cable returns home from eight-month overhaul

US Navy submarine tender USS Frank Cable (AS 40) returned to her Guam homeport on January 23 after completing an eight-month overhaul in Portland, Oregon.

Frank Cable, which departed Guam March 6, 2017, completed maintenance, renewal and repairs at Vigor Marine’s shipyard which returned the 40 year-old ship to its designed mission capabilities.

“This feels like a real homecoming,” said Electrician’s Mate 2nd Class Benjamin Duff, from Barrigada, Guam. “We have our shipmates and friends back in Guam, and it’s going to be a good reconnection. It’s going to be a good gathering.”

The tender received fifty-six million dollars worth of improvements, maintenance, steel renewal and equipment repairs.

During Frank Cable’s time away from Guam, sister ship USS Emory S. Land (AS 39) served as the lead repair facility conducting maintenance of submarines and surface vessels deployed in the US 5th and 7th Fleet areas of responsibility.

“It feels great to be back in Guam,” said Capt. Jeff Farah, commanding officer of Frank Cable. “Not only are the friends and families getting a chance to reunite, but we get a chance to build the camaraderie of our forward-deployed Naval forces, and represent our primary mission of repairing, rearming and resupplying surface and submarine forces.”
